Imagine a season in the AFL.. it goes for 22 weeks.

Imagine if some teams only played 15 times in that time. Others play 24 or more.

Imagine if some games when for 2 quarters rather than 4. And some 6.

Scores, percentages, ladders, wouldn't really create a true representation. Finals would be wrong - with teams playing more games and more quarters being advantaged.

The NPL is faced with the above scenario in trying to work out who should get a ticket to the finals.

No system is correct! No system is accurate. Finals in anything are the result of who was the best over an even amount of events and conditions (all things being equal).

There's so much luck involved. There were some venues where 2 or even 3 of the top 5 were also in the top 50. All of a sudden the 7th and 8th placed people are given a ticket, yet someone finishing 6th somewhere else, where no one was in the top 50, misses out.

As I said earlier - if it wasn't a smart business decision to make the change after season 1, then it wouldn't have changed for any real logical reason (I would assume).

Averages in anything... either have no restrictions, or a "minimum". Test cricketers can't be considered in the top 10 batsmen until they've played 25 tests. If it was capped at 50, then Steve Waugh, Sunny Gavaskar, etc.. would have monster averages over those who play 25 - 50 test.

As Pete wrote, reward the players who play lots (without forgetting they are playing lots because they want to, regardless! And playing NPL is a reward ;) ) but not treat them as though they are the best in the competition.

In the end though, the actual final itself should work it all out :)

You cannot compare a regular football season to any poker seasonal format. You think this system is unfair or labels players incorrectly. Check out the PN PotY or Crown Casino's tournament leaderboard.
They do not set a minimum or maximum on events but instead have a points system based around placings, they do not care whether a player plays 100 games or two, it is all points based. Unfortunately we cannot do points based as it really would skew towards the multi game players. And as said before the decision to allow the average of the best 15 games was a business/marketing decision but not purely that.
I don't think any points system, in a free poker league, can decide on who are the best players in the State, I think a lot more thought needs to be put into it.
Now in respect to the top 5 of last years State Leaderboard, I do think they are all good players, I have played against Enzo several times and he definitely does know what he is doing. To say that anyone on the top 10 leaderbaord are not and got their by blind luck is a stupid comment to make.
If the whole argument is based around the fact that people believe that the top 50 should not be in the State Finals, again I disagree, and say if this is the case then we will no longer bump people up on the venue leaderboards; as they did not qualify in the top 5 and do not deserve to be there.
So we will decrease our State Final numbers to about 200.
New System: Top 2 from each venue. (= 260 players)
Playoffs: Top 8 from each regional final which will have the top 200 on the regional leaderboard playing off for those positions (= 96 players)
State Leaderboard Playoff: Top 100 playoff and top ten move through to State Finals, Top 10 automatically qualify. (= 20 players)
That totals 376 qualifiers. 75% redemption rate so we have a State Final with 282 players. That would definitely produce the best of the best.

But for one more time, it's not all about the poker at NPL.

Great, 85 runners I think?
Most on a Tuesday
Final table was MAD.
Steve Nissen started with 2k and ended up heads up. Unbelievable run of cards.

Don't you already have 2 prize pools?

1) State final
2) best 50 non-decreasing averages

ok so only the top 2 or 3 currently get something for option 2....but it's still moolah.

P.S. Dave...nowhere did I mention blind luck :)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!
