how much physical fitness is required to play top level tennis, and how close to the maximum of human physical performance do tennis players get generally?

what is the difference in physical performance between a man and a woman?

would both sexes be operating at a similar percentage of their maximum performance by playing 3 sets and 5 sets respectively?

would this mean that women are working as "hard" to play 3 sets as a man does to play 5?

i love this stuff.

essentially, tennis requires some aerobic endurance as matches can be played over a long period of time, but it is mainly made up of repeated shorter bursts of energy - which utilises different energy systems.

A tennis player basically has many many repeated efforts followed by short recovery times, utilising energy from ATP-CP system and anaerobic glycolysis mainly. Because these systems have the ability to recover reasonably quickly, players can play long matches and perform repeated efforts for a pretty long time.

The differences in physical performance between men and women are chiefly due to size. Some other studies have been done but details are more sketchy. so basically:

- men have bigger lungs, so transport of oxygen into the blood stream is more efficient

- men have bigger hearts so can so have a bigger stroke volume and cardiac output to get CO2 out of the body

- bigger muscles = bigger force, longer leavers = quicker movement etc

- the presence of testosterone in men is the main reason why men are bigger in the first place.


Now for the second part of your question. I think it would be fair to suggest that two women playing a match that ends 10-8 in the third would work compartively hard to two men who play a 5 set marathon.


i actually agree with the argument that women should be paid the same as the men. its not their fault that they are physically inferior in most cases, and its not their fault that games only last for 3 sets. as benny the cunt said, the market will dictate how much sports people get paid.

And putting my feminist hat on, so what if the women might get paid comparitively more than the men. its not at the expense of male tennis players prize money, so why should we care.

Female soccer players, basketball players etc etc play in same length games as men but get paid nowhere as much. so people that think pay is or should be linked to how much work a sportsperson does are pretty wrong i think.

Just to add another angle on the discussion...

Take a large group of spectators (need a fairly big sample size for accuracy) and ask them "which one they would rather watch?": Men's or Women's tennis.

I think you'd get 3 categories of answers, none of which would give an overall definitive answer.

Physical sporting perspective: Where it is likely the men would win out (IMO) due to just plain naturally being bigger, stronger, faster etc

Competetive spectacle: Either of them could win here as fans are happy to see a close and keenly contested match, even if they aren't the best players to watch. ie they like to see two players that are closely matched trying their hardest to win no matter what.

Pleasant on the eyes: The women have a decent chance of winning here (again, IMO) due to the vast numbers of men watching the tennis with the sound off. Couldn't care less who wins, as long as there's a hottie to look at. I'm sure guys like Nadal have a few followers too.

So I guess everyone would have to ask "what determines the amount of prizemoney for men and women if the overall spectacle for the fans is the yardstick?"

I have no problems believing that isn't the only measure, but surely it would be a big factor in the process.

One side of the fence would argue 'oh but we have close games too!'
Other side might argue 'mens sport is much better to watch!'

And so on and so forth.

Would love to know how they decide these things.
