Poker formats and Variants

Postby Garth Kay » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:48 pm

Next question:

If you could select three of the below formats or variants to be introduced to regular NPL events (either in a weekly, bi weekly or monthly format) which three would you choose.

Shootout Each round is comprised of SNG's top 2 of each SNG progresses to next round, with chips accumulated thus far.

Eliminators Basically knockout events where a leaderboard is formed based on points but as well as how many players the individual has eliminated by the time the FT is formed. Winner of eliminator LDB at end of season wins cash prize, or cash is awarded for every elimination.

6 Max As in definition a tournament with 6 players to a table

Bounty 1 player from each table becomes a bounty, prize is awarded to the player who eliminates bounty.

Deepstack The stuff AK's and benny the cunt's wet dreams are made of, 10K in chips, 30 minute blind levels, not so relaxed blind structure. Saturday event.

Partners Pretty obvious this one, team up with your favourite player and alternate blind levels, but 4 passports per team, obviously partners are ranked same position, so for these vents 2x1st pos, 2 x 2nd pos, etc...

Teams 6 man teams events, just for the fun of it but could become a buy in event or charity event.

Heads Up Challenge The ultimate form of NL hold em. Would be a buy in event of some sorts as would require dealers and there would be a cap on player numbers, probably 32 or 64.

High Roller A buy in event, possibly 120 - 200. 20K start stacks with 40 minute blind levels, one day event, but good pay day.

Pot Limit Omaha The good old game that is having a huge comeback.

HORSE The poker pro's game, very involved and only for the extremely experienced player.

Heads up Challenge!

If you're looking to make these events week at regular NPL games, you're going to have a hard time implementing most of them. The only one's I see working are Shootouts and 6 max (6 max seems like a waste of table space - for 6 max to actually be 6 max, you would need deeper stacks). Eliminators would be very hard to police. Bounty seems stupid. Will just create players going all in every to KO the bounty, and for what, a free drink? Who decides who's bounty? What if said player doesn't want to be a bounty?

Pot Limit OMAHA and Horse? Good luck. Most of these events could work for the championship series, though.

My picks:
- Heads Up Challenge.
- Shootout.
- Deepstack.

I'm a big fan of 6max as well but you said we could only pick 3 :)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!
