So when you say it was probably just a bad angle from your viewpoint: I think it should be up to players to do the right thing and make sure everyone can see their big chips... Heck stack them infront! I usually do (when I have em), and I reckon it adds a bit of 'fear equity' if you do!
Tips for maintaining concentration????

Re: Tips for maintaining concentration????
Aces: I made the exact same mistake, but the guy actually WAS hiding his large denomination chips behind 4 stacks of 100s! Luckily, other players at the table also said they couldn't see his chips (He had moved only about 6 hands earlier) and the TD ruled he was in violation of the rule that you must keep your high denom chips in plain view and awarded me the pot (he shoved over my raise, I hadn'y called when this happened: pity
) and made him sit out an orbit. This was a buyin event so they were a bit mnore strict on these kinds of rules than the usual NPL weekly games though...

Was this an NPL/888PL cash buy in event?
That is the most ridiculous ruling ever.

Re: Tips for maintaining concentration????
yeah i always thought it was bad ettiquette not to have your big chips in front, but to have a pot awarded against you and be sat out (especially as they had just moved to the table i.e. first offence) just seems odd.
If you cant see a person's stack properly, ask for a count. and then tell them they are a dick and to stop also being a tool.

Riskers gamble, experts calculate.

It hasn't been mentioned if this particular person is a repeat offender and has been told multiple times and/or given fair warning as to what would happen.
If they were such a person, I think it's pretty fair.
If not, very harsh indeed.

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

No not NPL/88PL event, and I thought giving me the pot was a bit much, but making him sit out an orbit is fair.
Do you think is was wrong to penalize him at all, or just the severity of the penalty?
888PL rules (now much enhanced, as it used to be only about 30 points on a single webpage, now a 23 page pdf!) states:
In the 'Policies Section':
12. Any player is entitled to a clear view of an opponent’s chips. Higher denomination chips should be easily visible and located at the front of all chip stacks.
and again in the Rules Section:
'24. Higher-denomination chips must be placed where they are easily visible to all other players.'

Re: Tips for maintaining concentration????
Was this the first instance the player had been made aware of it by the TD? Or was this on the back of one or several warnings?
Edit: what Pete said above

Re: Tips for maintaining concentration????
I am not aware of any prior warnings as i said, the player was new to my table...
Reading through the official 888PL rules again, I found even more references to the display of chips:
'8. Awareness of the amount being in play for each opponent is an important part of poker. All chips must be kept in plain view.'

I'd say it's an incredibly harsh penalty.

If its a first offence, give the player a simple tap on shoulder, and tell them where their chips need to be stacked, in what order, and why. If the offender repeats, sit them out for an orbit.
Taking a pot away from the is ludicrous.

Re: Tips for maintaining concentration????
We actually have used these rules since inception almost, NPL in Sydney did not want them live on their website. So great to finally have our own website that we control most of the content.
It is an incredibly harsh penalty.
The most that should happen is a warning issued, if this player is a repeat offender then possibly a three hand to one orbit penalty applied.
Also you do not get into the finer details of what occurred, he pushed all in and did you request a count or did you just see the chips and assumed a count?
In the above case you have detailed I would actually issue a warning to the player and leave it at that. I do not kill the hand, it still goes to showdown, and you learn from your mistake as well.
Always be aware of your opponents chip count and always ask for a count when you are calling for your tournament life.
