A Mexican attack on SA

Or

My Adelaide Trip Report.

Well i am going to start from the beginning on this one.

Got into Adelaide on Thursday, Garth drove me around a little, met some of the staff. And then we went to play at Cavan after doing a few venue runs, and stopping to have dinner (still wish i could have finished it) and to play poker. Just because Shannon asked us nicely.

Cavan, had some cards, did pretty well. Lost a few hands. Was in good form when my aces got called by Matty (?) with his A Q. Needless to say aces held. And the brothers both went through to the final table. Good stuff there. Couldn't connect with any boards. And got knocked out by Carl or as he is known on here. Boss260. So final table out in 7th i think it was.

Next stop Red Square. Nice venue. outside is a good touch, and it was an enjoyable evening. Great start to any poker game when you flop the nut straight, and have 4 people calling someone elses 500 flop bet. Needless to say no bad beat here, took that pot down. Cruised the rest of the way.

The guy opposite me later, he had me on tilt, because he wouldn't be quiet. Not to mention he always had the cards. So was not winning any battles where i could get ahead and knock him out. Needless to say, when the tables were broken down. I was relieved. Got into the final 16. Pushed with a couple of hands.

Unfortunately my Q 10 got called by 8 2 and i called the 2 on the turn, The cards never fail to dissapoint me.

Garth had gone on to the Late game at the Strathmore. So he offered to register me. But i was content to watch him go out early. And have a relatively early night before the Big Day Out on the Friday

Unfortunately my luckbox of a brother managed to make it deep in the tournament. Going all in blind and getting his straight to keep him in the game. All in all good venue. Fun night, Pretty knackered at 4.30am

End of Thursday

Friday
What i was really excited about. The Big Day Out. Rage against the Machine, Grinspoon, Josh Pyke, Silverchair, Augie March, Sarah Blasko...... awesome line up, wish i could have seen them all. However due to it being Garths Birthday, and me seeing half the bands i wanted. We decided to keep our awesome spot, and watch Bjork so that we would be in Prime Position for Rage against the Machine. Would have liked to see Augie March at that time. But the decision was made.

Needless to say, the decision is one hour i will probably never get back. To be replaced by 1 hour, i would be happy to relive over and over. All i can Say is Rage Against the Machine. Was absolutely, super, fantastically, most unbelievably the best experience ever. Glad i can say that i have seen Rage Live. Maybe next time, it could be for a sideshow or a longer concert, But hell i saw them live. Hehehe

After the Big Day Out, we went back to a staff members house, for a couple of cash games.

1st game, got crippled when my A Q was slowplayed into Enzo's A 9 with the board reading x 9 x A A. Needless to say was going to struggle to come back after that game.

2nd Game. Not certain what happened in this game. Think i pushed into someone holding a hand. Think i wanted to sleep at this point hence why i can't remember much about that game, except my eyes being closed for most of it.

So at the end of Friday.
Brett 1 NPL Players 4 Garth 1.5 (1/2 for the BDO Viewing idea)

Saturday.
Saturday the day of rest. Think this was the kick back and relax day. Get the NPL teams event all sorted and prepared. Random number generating and trying to make certain teams don't have two players on the same table. So working on that. Once done, was easy.

Same Scored as Friday.

Sunday
The Teams Event

What can i say about this. I had an awesome time. Met a lot of people from the Forums, from the players. From my perspective i thought it went off very well. However hearing about a few of the incidents that has occurred after it, i don't know what to say.

This is my personal opinion.
In a teams event, the main idea is to be consistent and to perform as a team. That means if you have one superstar, then you are relying on his result to get you over the line.

If your team is competent, then you are looking at a good performance overall. In general the feeling is that you are only as strong as your weakest link.

I also have this philosophy in regards to baseball which can be applied to this event. Don't argue over the small things, argue over the big things. In this case, if your team missed the cut by one point, you know for next time to make certain that you are passed that cut off and beyond doubt.

And definitely don't rely on things going your way to make it through to another round. Especially relying on a team being disqualified for not following instructions. Imagine if we did that in our regular events.

I feel that all teams knew the format, if they didn't they only had to ask for clarification. But all teams were playing the same format, to the same set of rules, to a relative random spread of tables. Enough of the politics onto the game play.

Round 1. 2nd Flight.
I had Patty to my left. I had Matty G on position on me. Felt like i had to prove myself at the table, mainly both because i am staff and also with my posts in the Tips and Strategies Section. Nothing like having people's respect to back up any gameplay tips.

Needless to say, the table started slow. Everyone testing the waters. Not chasing just yet, purely because the points were important to the overall totals for the event.

I must applaud Matty G on folding his pocket 2's to my pocket 3's on a board of 4 5 5. Was good fun at that table. But managed to finish 3rd to the vital 7 points.

Round 2.
With Suzie K to my left. And a few other players on the table. I was very hesitant to try and start this one to strong. Purely still trying to get the result so that the Staff teams weren't disgraced. LOL.

Needless to say, flopping quads and having Gail (i think) Betting into me with pocket kings, definitely helped to set me up on this table.

Also Betting the people out of the side pot, when suzie k was all in, to pick up the extra chips also helped. Except when suzie showed pocket 10's to trip up, to stay in the game. Shortstacked off course.

But must say the guy in the green shirt to Suzie's Left. I was scared because you had enough chips to play back against me. I did mean it when i said i was scared off you. And also to BigRed23. Richard. Mate good work on the win. I was probably loose at the last stage of the game. But with a 3 or 4 to 1 chip lead on you. You managed to double up, outchip the out play me.

I am impressed and will say it again well done.

Round 3.
The MTT round of 24.
Think my deepstack and MTT skills have gone donwhill. Been playing way too many sit n goes.

But started off slowly, grinded up to arouynd 3500. However with my brother on the table. i knew there was always going to be that one hand that would shaft me over.

Needless to say the Q 10 of spades came up. Garth Holding the NPL Staff revered hand of K 4 of Clubs.

And with the board showing. the Ks 9c 6s. I pushed with a strong drawing hand. To see the next cards brick me out. And i lost to my brother. Definitely stopping claims that me and him were colluding LOL. Think i was playing for pride on the NPL team. I was playing for bragging rights against him. LOL.

So finished in 18th spot.

Final score.
Brett 1 NPL Players 6 Garth 2.5

Round 4 Teams Event.
The final round. The Family One playing off for that seat to the 150k Champs.

All i can say is i was proud to be able to see a team, decide to do this the fairest way possibly after a long day of poker. There was no arguments, there was no squabbling. Every one agreed to it, everyone was happy to do it.

I was happy to oblige and manage to deal the ultimate blinder of a hand.

With one green chip each, all in on the first hand. All cards being face down until the showdown.

The flop Came.

Q 9 4

The Turn

Q

The River

K

Player one two pairs. Queens and Fours.
Player Two Two Pairs Kings and Queens.
Player Three a Straight to the King.
Player for two pairs. Queens and Kings
Player five Missed
Player six.
Showed the queen for trips. Everyone was hoping for the Full house. however the second card was the 5 of diamonds. So trips.
Players 7 missed the board.
Player 8 i think had queens and fours also.

After the hand. They all congratulated each other, gathered around for the obligatory team photo. All smiling and happy.

That made the teams event for me. No bickering no snide comments. All proud as punch to be the winning team. All smiling, happy to be the overall event winner. Happy for the team member (Dave Bounds) to be going to represent them at the NPL 150k champs.

Overall Result
Final score.
Brett 1 NPL Players 6 Garth 2.5

Happy to let the NPL Players take the win on this one. I think it is only fair. Think with everyone i played against i tried to say thanks for playing and unlucky on the cards. All are good players. I am happy to have been a part of the event.

Sorry for the long report. But just want to thank everyone who introduced themselves to me. Would have loved to have spent some more time talking to a lot of the forum regulars. But alas i had to come back to Victoria to work.

Cheers.

Brett.

For those interested.
Monday was the superbowl.
Always go for the underdogs, but hate any team from New York. So definitely not a win for Brett there either. But a great game to watch.

Really good playing on that table with you Brett, one of the toughest games i've ever played after playing back at you with my 2's against your 3's and getting short stacked to 175 chips.

BOSS260 is my good mate Ronnie Morgan as well not karl and i did hear that he was the first south australian to knock you out!!!

Hope to catch up next time your over, and next time i'll get ya with my 2's!!!

As long as he doesn't take it BACK to Victoria and claim at as "Victoria's own teams event", he is an honorary Croweater. ;)
