NOT true at all.... But the commercial software vendors love people thinking this way ;)
Most of the free ones, certainly AVG, are only free for non-commercial use. So the free version is usually exactly the same for a single PC user as the 'commercial' version... (commercial versions usually add a few features for multi computer environments)

Personally I have found the best free solution to be AVG antivirus (Clam is also good, but I personally havent used it) and Comodo Firewall.

Also using a malware scanner like SpyBot S&D regularly and another Comodo product called BOClean monitors for other malware in realtime (I also use BOClean)... Havent had any security problems in over 2 years with these products, and people I know (have PC-PC contact with) who use other solutions, some commercial, have been effected whereas I havent so it must be working!

I would NEVER pay for such software, in fact the ONLY software I HAVE paid for is Windoze... And I am not saying I pirate software, as a developer myself I wouldnt do this...

Open Source people.... Open Source, and the GPL (or LGPL)!!!! not that AVG or Comodo is open source, but there is a wealth of software out there that is, and often better than commercial offerings. Compare Sun's Open Office to Microsoft (macroslop) Office.... No contest considering one is free!

There are 2 other great free utilities, Advanced System Care and a Disk Defragmenter, from IOBit Software, which I find mandatory for keeping my windows 'bloat free'.... Get em and run em regularly :)

Can get you a year licence of Kaspersky for SFA Bacon.

And in the meantime you can download it from kaspersky.com for a one month trial, then use the key you get with it after a month.

Kaspersky's been stuck on 13% for the past hour, on full scan, so if your AVG works, don't f*ck with it.
