Rounders II

Postby Nathan Butler » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:58 pm

Anyway else hear the rumors flying around about the second rounders movie.

Apparently it is still yet to be titled and will have a more online poker focus (possibly about the UB/AP/Potripper scam) It is set to be filmed/based in Costa Rica and Leonardo Di Caprio is set to take the starring roll.

After Romeo and Juliet i hated Di Caprio, but he has made some damn fine movies. He was fantastic in The Departed!

Any other opinions?

i havent seen the first one yet

went to my local (country) vid store only a week ago and asked for it and they only had it on tape- i dont have a tape player any more so i am yet to watch it

speaking of Dicapro - i saw him in a great film maybe 2 years back- to do with the african diamond trade- i cant remember what it was called but he was very good.
Does anyone know how to make money playing uno vs 6 year olds, its about the only card game i get to play these days.

I heard about this film, but didn't know it was going to be a sequel to Rounders. Where did you hear that?

DiCaprio is a fucking amazing actor.

I read it in the blog/forum section of www.Cardplayr.com (it was a site published article).

I was speaking with a friend who is quite involved in the poker industry at a very high level (and has been for some time) and it has been speculated in the past that the initial Rounders movie is based on Jeff Lisandro. This came up in conversation as we were discussing his 3 bracelet effort this WSOP.

Jeff, was studying law. Has a GF studying law who left him. One of Jeffs first backers was one of his law professors at that time. Jeff spend some of his youth doing the rounds in Atlantic city. He also (why down on his roll) pick up a delivery job, while attempting to go straight.

Those were the key similarities. There isn't any mention of him have a card shark/deck mechanic freind... but the main character (Matt Damon) and Jeff have a many life experiences in common.

and now to change topics. My favorite actor at the moment is Mark Wahlberg. Everything he has been in (since Planet of the Apes) has been sensational.

That's not that uncommon. Only the delivery job bit. Interesting little story though, if it is true.

I like his work too. But how the hell did he get nominated over all his co stars for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for The Departed? :? He was good, but allll of his co stars were better.

Poker Network wrote:JEFF LISANDRO

I searched for many years to find the Great White Shark of Aussie Big Bet Poker. The lone player who roamed the world outside the pack and circling for prey. Unheralded, unsung and unaccompanied. It was only during the Crown Aussie Millions 2006 that I realised it was our old poker companion Jeff Lisandro.

Jeff was born in Perth Western Australia 30 July 1965. He was a smart student at school but left early anxious to explore the more exciting side of life. He joined his father as a driller in the mining camps of the North honing his skills as a player from his early games around the kitchen table with the family. It was a good (and successful life). He soon found that, with Dad’s help, he developed a poker intuition that stood him in good stead later in life. He spent two years in the field at the end of which he made more money at cards than he did with a pay packet. In the early eighties he was off to the city slickers in Sydney to play poker for a living. He has done that for the last 20 years. He has never been sponsored or financed in his career. He works alone, plays with his own money, tries to play in schools where he is favoured to win and plays to win not to boost his ego. Jeff is always the quietest and best mannered player at the table. If you can’tnd him, look for the biggest pile of chips.

Sydney in the eighties was a “Wilest” of Cnos, spreading from the hub of The Cross to the limits of suburbia, North, South and West. As a young 20-year-old Jeff played the field mainly in the Kings Cross, CBD City area. These were boom years and he prospered picking up a very generous living. The Sydney casinos were considered “legal” the snties and early eighties, somewhat “illegal” ine mid eties until the shut down in the late eighties. (Perth, Jupiters and Adelaide Casinos all opened in the mid eighties and the pressure was on for a licensed Sydney Casino). The famous illegals were soon to shut down and move to smaller and more modest quarters.

Jeff did so well in the early eighties he joined up with Joe Meissner and opened the “biggest and besCasino in Austra, The Goulburn Club that was well run and popular, so much so that it was closed by a personal visit from the Premier in the late eighties. The era of the big illegals was soon over and the growth of Licensed Casinos commenced. In retrospect The Goulburn was run on legal lines and approached the performance of current licensed Casinos.

Everybody thought they could play poker at the time and everybody thought they would win. The Mullet /Barramundi were plentiful (I was one of them) and it was easy pickings for a professional young player like Jeff. I suppose Jeff made a packet at the Goulburn but it was soon to put to good use back in Perth 1987/88.

1987 Perth was the home of WA Incorporated with Bond and his mates and money flowed like a busted faucet. Millionaires were two Bob a dozen. They were rich with OP (Other Peoples) money and they were looking for any sort of risk action to double it. It wasn’t until 1988 that tbanks called their markers and the bust of 88 reduced the field. Big Bet Draw Poker was the game and this was Jeff’s specialty. His homecame the Perth Casino playing the Millionaire game. By the end of 1987 Jeff had won his first major stakes, a multi million block of apartments which he retains to this day.

After the bust Jeff roamed Australia looking for big games. By this time his reputation preceded him and games were hard to find. Money was scarce and the players were loath to risk it with a proven performer. There were a few Casino tournaments around but not many BB cash games.

In 1990 Jeff headed off to Europe and London and started to learn the newer games Stud and Holdem. It was typical of his play that he didn’t go straight to the biames. He spent time watching and learning with the small games until finally he felt ready to take on the open field. By this time he was a patient and proficient Poker Pro headed for the International big time.

He teamed up with some Russian business mates and opened Casino Ruisse in Moscow in 1992. This operated throughout the “revolution” and was highluccessful. could be said that Jeff introduced Casino Poker to Russia. There are many players today who passed through his Casino as an essential part of their poker education. A feature of play was that, because of the curfew play commenced at 1800 in the evening and went through until 0600 the next morning. There was no hit and run poker here. If you made a hit you reinvested – no arguments in Russia at thtime.

In 1993 Jeff took leave from Russia and went to Vegas to play Limit Holdem and to learn from those who at that time were probably the best in the world. No Big Bet poker for Jeff. He played 20/40 for a year with the local champs who are now playing 2000/4000 in Vegas. Don’t ever imagine that the best plrs in Vegas are the one’s who hit the headlines. They areobably playing for big bucks at the back of the casino whilst the others are out front before the cameras. Jeff was and is a part of this group.

With this top-level experience at his fingertip, in 1994, he was off again to Europe once more to Casinos in Vienna, Paris and later Ireland. A virtual unknown on the tournament circuit he soon stretched all comers with a major 1994 year in Europe winning six major tournaments in that year and being in the money in 19 of 20 games. His success was such that he was gently asked if he would please leave the Casino because he was winning too consistently and the other players were running dry. In 1995 he hit the Irish tournament and won 3 out of 4 tournaments. He was also successful in Holland.

By this time he was becoming well known as a winning player and following his policy of finding new fields and playing alone he secretly went to Turkey in Istanbul in 1995 and hid from the poker world for 12 months. He was very successful playing his lone game. Selection of venue and players remains a secret of winning poker.

He returned to Vegas in 1996 where he continued his success. After a short and successful appearance in the 1996 Canberra tournaments he returned to Russia and opened the Cosmos Casino, which became a major poker venue. Many believe he has taught the Russians and many of his associates the strategy for Big Bet Poker. “Know the game, know the players, als play below your level of proficiency and don’t make waves”. In 1999 he started therst major toament in his Club Moscow in the Hotel Leningradski in Russia, which continues today. He left Russia in 2000 having proven that he could make more money playing poker than running it. This success continues to this day where he is still the “Great White Shark” from Downunder, travelg big distances fhigh stakes, alone and away from the pack.

Jeff has always played with his own money, has no sponsors or financers, he averages up to USD500K a year and has made millions in some special years.
.
His highlights have been The Goulburn 85, Perth 1986, Russia 1993, Europe 85, Casino Moscow 96 and the World Series Lake Tahoe 2005. He was the leading Aussie poker playing at the WSOP 2006 placed in the Main event and in the money race.

Since the small start in the mid seventies he has never had a losing year. He plays to win and not for ego. Perhaps it is true that Ego is a Poker Players worst enemy?

IMHO Jeff is Australia’s most successful poker player, but lookout J there are some Young Guns right up your tail this year..

Have cards – will travel.

This movie is in pre production but it is not a sequel to rounders.
It will be more focused on the era when online poker was launched and the boom hit; money was flowing everywhere and the scene will be set in some exotic tax haven of an island and will be about the journey of a poker player/software developer and the amount of money circulating around at that time.

It will still be primarily poker based but the writers of the script are constantly re writing and re working due to production companies demands. This will be another great poker script that will be ruined by the compulsory need for Action, love interests and the required amount of drama and sex appeal to attract the opposite sex and the non poker playing masses.
