I get about 230, but given my distance from the exchange, that's good.

Hopefully, my new place will get greater speeds :)

Kaspersky's 2010 version is available now too, just in case you downloaded the 2009 version Bacon.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

just checked and it's 2010.

BTW, I do like it now. Seems my teething problems at the beginning were user error.

Didn't read much of the thread but BitDefender is the best PC protection software IMO

2 years(ish) ago you said the same thing about AVG.

I remember it because it was one of the few times I tolerated going to Roulettes to be ripped off :)

I would have said, AVG is the best free protection going around. I (well my family) have always used purchased versions of BD. It was james that came across the software and got me on to it.

I will agree though that it's probably the better of the free ones. So yes, if a person was to insist on not paying anything - and was also happy to accept that it's very simply not the best product out there and they may still have problems - then AVG is for them.

What a ridiculous conclusion!
AVG is only an antivirus, not a firewall, etc...
And I use extra software as an added precaution, not because I dont beleive AVG isn't up to it.
If I install an extra lock or a chain guard on my front door, does that mean the first one wasnt up to it? Not at all.
And what, do you think Norton Internet Security is a single program? or McAfee or whatever? They are suites of software.

What is your basis for the claim that AVG or such and such is not the best out there?
Having been part of a team that wrote security software for the DSTO, as well as writing exploits that test systems security, I stand by what I say in this and my OP.

You still need more than an antivirus... ATLEAST a firewall.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My point was, that you don't need to pay to get top quality software (of any sort). Take Linux as an example (which has almost ZERO security issues). WAY better than windows, and free! Just a pity MS has such a monopoly in the PC operating system world, meaning more software (alot of it free) available for it, but its basically a crap OS... 95% of viruses/worms/trojans/rootkits are windows targeted... Why? cos its full of security holes!
Another (maybe better) example is Apache's Web server, dominant market share of the web, over 130 million deployments worldwide (not including intranets) and its free! 100%, absolutely NO loopholes FREE!
Or MS SQL Server (or Oracle) vs PostgreSQL or MySQL... MASSIVE license fees vs free... but all the MS & Oracle solutions really offers is features 99% of DBMSs will NEVER need or use. Yet companies continue to pay 10s (100s) of 1000s of dollars each year for it, while slashing inhouse development budgets! Crazy!
On the other hand there are progressive (and massively wealthy) companies like GOOGLE using almost exclusively free software (and most of the rest is developed inhouse)....

But keep burning your money Pete, and anyone else still paying for most (all?) of their software...

But read this first. - Seriously...
