he drove awesomely well.

he was on a 2 stop strategy as well, while most of the leaders were on 3

they tried to switch barrichello to a 2, but they had troubles with refeuling, which meant he had a 12 second pit stop, and still had to have 3 stops.

massa was holding the field up at one stage - mark catching up was lapping 2 seconds a lap quicker than massa.

then when they all pitted, he took the lead

There were a few factors. Firstly, Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren jumped up into third place at the start thanks to his KERS boost (delivers 80bhp to get ahead of the non KERS equipped cars of Red Bull and Brawn) and he then managed to hold up Button, Massa, and Vettel with a significantly slower car so that by the time Webber was made to take the penalty he was already 15 seconds up the road.

The time between the actual incident and the taking of the penalty was 12 or 13 laps. Thats 12 laps of lapping consistently up to one second faster than the cars behind Kovalainen. He was able to take the penalty and rejoin the circuit still in second ahead of the McLaren.

Barrichello made his pitstop at the same time as Webber took his drive through penalty. Crucially, he rejoined behind the pack of cars and was held up while Webber was able to take advantage of some clear air and really put the hammer down. Barrichello was then held up by Felipe Massa (who was running a longer strategy) for several laps at up to two seconds away from the pace that Webber was able to run at with clear air. Webber was able to cruise straight up behind Barrichello again.

Finally, Barrichello was on a three stop strategy. The wrong strategy as it turned out, but the only one Brawn could employ because they couldn't generate enough heat into the tyres which led to graining and loss of performance.

Simply put, there was no real possible way for Webber to lose this race. I said yesterday that it would be a Red Bull one two finish. They had a huge car advantage in Germany. Hungary is expected to be hotter which should play to the Brawns a little more. If they get trounced again by Red Bull then the championship fight is truly on!

At the start he Webber thought he had room to move accross the track to enter turn one. Unfortunately there was another car there (Finno knows who) luckily the other cars front LH wheel only buffed the RH side pod. I believe there wasn't any damage to either car allowing Webber to enter the turn in first place the rest is as Finno described in his epic post LOL.

By the way nice post (report) Finno obviously you love or like GP racing.

No, he wasn't moving to turn into the first corner because that was still a good couple of hundred metres away yet. He made a dangerous manouever towards Barrichello, probably realising (too late) that he needed to cover the inside line to defend against any chargers such as Barrichello, who was already there. It was a slightly silly thing to do. If either car was turned around there would've been an appalling mess.

There is a rule stating that you cannot change your line more than once in the run down to the first corner (a legacy of the old Schumacher days of chopping into your opponent's direct line). If I remember, Webber had already moved once, so making that second jink was asking for trouble.

I do quite like it, yeah :D

I would just like to add that if he DIDN'T drop the F-bomb as he crossed the finish line then that would have been un-Australian :P
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Mark also commented in the post race press conference that he didnt realize Barrichello was there as the mirrors and all the aero on the car only gives you a very narrow view behind. From memory I think Mark suffered slight damage to his front wing, when there was contact between him and Lewis Hamilton at the first corner which resulted in Hamiltom getting a puncture in his RF tire... Cant have been too bad though.
