In the CBI I mentioned above, I asked what the size of the pot was... You know the normal pile of chips splashed in the middle on top of the preflop muck (not when its my turn to deal though)... I wasnt in the hand though.
No one answered, and the dealer didnt attempt to make a count, so I layed out the chips as any casino dealer (or ex) would have, only to be told by the TD not to touch the chips... OK, fair enough I wasnt the dealer...
But he then told me, not being in the hand, I had NO right to even ask the pot size...
I responded "Well I like to observe opponents in hands Im not involved in, and wanted to see the pot compared to a bet size, I asked the dealer for a count and he ignored me"
Seriously, am I wrong to want to know a count when not involved in the hand?

Yep, count them yourself (in your head, without touching them) if you're not in the hand.

Otherwise, if you actually are in the hand, ask the dealer and he pretty much has to do it.

Actually, I could be wrong here but that's how I understand it.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

I don't think you can actually ASK for the count, as Pete said, count yourself. Of course, that's pretty hard with the chips all over the place.... but depending on where the hand is, you can manually do it. (you know 3 callers of the 400 bet, plus a SB = 1300)

The thing I often forget, when I'm dealer, is announcing the amount of the all-in. My understanding is I have to wait for the callee to announce they want a count.
I'm not perfect. I'm what perfect aspires to become

If you push allin you're not obliged to tell anyone anything until asked for.

Likewise, the dealer shouldn't be saying anything until asked.

Thats kinda my point that it was quite a pile of chips, was about 10K @ 100/200, denominations from 100 to 1000 in the pot, so basically uncountable just by looking... It was on the turn from memory, maybe the river... Of course, I can count any flop pot (before any bets) based on how many see the flop and if its limped or raised...
But was I wrong to ask, not being involved in the hand?
Previous pots we had upto 3 people touching the chips, which I know doesnt make me touching them right, but often when a count is asked for, and Im not the dealer, I will be asked to do the count as I can count it quicker than the dealer...

In addition, dealer ONLY should be touching the chips in the pot.

I know...
But it seems to be acceptable when the dealer asks me to do the count for them.
I was just surprised that I couldnt ask the dealer to count when not in the hand. Personally when the dealer myself, I feel it my responsibility to make sure it is easy to read the pot size... Or maybe I just hate seeing an unruly pile of chips in the middle... ;)

Yes, I read what you said, just wanted to be sure...

Think of it this way, if you're not in the hand then it's none of your business asking anyone to do anything :)

nothing stopping you from remembering who called or bet for how much or trying to do a visual count though.

Pretty sure you're not allowed to ask for a count of the pot in NL Holdem, if you're in the hand or not. Limit is a different story I think, but all the dealer can do in NL is consolidate the pot if asked (read: stack it into a manageable pile so you can work it out yourself). I remember Garth telling the FT at the first Berri deepstack the same.
