although, it wasn't hawking that proved that the escape velocity is the speed of light, but actually that things DO get out of a black hole (hawking radiation)

Yeah, i just meant that as most* of his research has been on black holes... And he is widely associated with 'em. [Edit: not most but alot]

But as I understand Hawking Radiation, it isnt actually coming from inside the black hole, but is the result of particle/anti-particle pairs created just near the event horizon, and one particle is drawn in by the gravity and one escapes, but its been a long time since I thought of any of this so I could be wrong? Or I could be thinking of a different phenomena entirely...

essentially, but its a whole lot complicated than that, as far as i know. unfortunately i didn't do honours physics so i dont know much more about it.
