THIS is the Aussie way - makin' it even easier to ditch work :D

Pharmacists supply sick notes

Pharmacists look set to start writing certificates for sick leave and carer’s leave following the release of new guidelines on the issue.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia have jointly issued guidelines which specify the circumstances under which a pharmacist writing such a certificate would be appropriate and when the customer needs to be referred to a medical practitioner.

Pharmacists are entitled to charge for issuing a medical certificate, according to the guidelines, and it is up to the individual pharmacist to determine how much this fee for the service will be.

The guidelines advise against a pharmacist issuing a certificate for more than two days and for anyone with a chronic illness for which the person takes prescription medicines. They also state the certificates may not be valid for workers’ compensation claims or as evidence of health and welfare benefit entitlement.

The law allowing health professionals, other than just doctors to write medical certificates was changed back in 2006 but was not widely adopted by pharmacists mainly due to the lack of guidelines governing the practice potentially exposing them to medicolegal risk.
