Re: Port Magpies
Gundog you are sadly making up facts again. The crows NEVER said that they would want a side in the SANFL, in fact the crows LOVE the current system where their players are spread out among different teams. The fact is that the corws would consider it unfair if the power had a team in the sanfl and they didnt, bu this decision about the merger was made by the sanfl clubs, NOT the crows, and the crows never had any input into it, it was never their business.
I hope the magpies survive, and its sad that pickard pulled out, but the fact is that the SANFL is still an extremely strong competition - dont mistake the magpies problems as meaning that the SANFL is doomed or whatever, cos it most certainly is not.

Learnt to live with it doesn't sound like they LOVE the spread out system.

Steven Trigg wrote:“This football club worked really hard in trying to get a reserves side [in 1991]… but through the late-90s we probably backed away from that because we learned to live with the system,” he said.
“If Port Adelaide was to get a reserves side we would expect to get a reserves side because it’s only fair and reasonable."

Wrong ..........it wa being openly discussed on 5AA last Friday week.
Thanks Bacon this is most likely where the story started, and I also recall 3 or 4 years back John Reid talking to KG and Graham on the 5AA Saturday Footy Show about the time the SANFL were looking at options for a 10th team, he said the Crows would prefer a 2nd tier team rather than players not selected playing for their SANFL team, he also qualified his position by pointing out that the crows had no control on what position or the amount of game time the player would get, or for that they would be selected at all, he used the example that if they were grooming a player for the forwards and the SANFL club played the player somewhere else they had no control over that.
And I think at some stage Nth Adel when Jars was the coach this exact situation occured and the Crows were very unhappy.
Without the real PAFC (SANFL) it would make an 8 team league a bit mickey mouse, and one hopes that the PAFC survives this dark period in its history.

Re: Port Magpies
whilst it may have been discussed earlier, it was never part of the current merger discussions. that article you cite was from feb 1st, and would have been speculation, before the actual details of the merger idea were known

Re: Port Magpies
exactly, what i was saying was that the crows having or not having a reserves side was never a factor in the most recent merger discussion.
The crows saying that if port had a reserves side then they would want one, doesnt actually mean the corws are pushing for their own reserves side. At the current time, they would much rather maintain the status quo, but if the power had a resereves side then the crows would feel abliged to ask for one as to not be disadvantaged.
