For me, its a tie between Sean Connery and Roger Moore. I did really like Daniel Craig's performance though, gave Bond some character.

Yes. Well, the movies at least. The series had hit a stale point before Casino Royale. I blame that on Pierce Bronson, plus the whole 'James Bond, (the movies, their style) secret agent' thing was getting old.
I don't think Bond will ever die. Hopefully, there will always be a need for his combination of action/danger/humour. He's just too popular a character to die off.
The main reason the Bond movies work so well is because when you walk into that cinema you
know what you're getting. You know the majority of the movie will be Bond vs the bad guys, then at the end, Bond will win. You're gonna get action, and one liners. There's always gonna be a need for that.
And the James Bond movies do a great (if not the
best) job at providing that service.
