On glaring ommision in all these reply posts:

The knife can be thrown, so it is also a ranged weapon...
I'll take the knife any day of the week.

Yes but throwing a knife at somebody won't kill them. And once you have thrown it you are unarmed and vulnerable. Id love to have a bat every day of the week. I love having a bat in fact.

And you will lose, when you fail to kill me with your one attempt, while I spend the next 10mins pounding the bat into your face :D

Yeah you can throw a bat, but have you ever heard of the film "House of Flying Baseball Bats"???
I was just saying it is an aspect that does favour the knife a bit imho (in terms of a throwing weapon), that had been overlooked so far in discussing its utility in a fight.

You'd have to, otherwise you're done. And fatally too.

Throwing away your only defense is probably the stupidist thing you could do while being attacked by a bat.

Even if you could throw your knife and actually hit your target, you are not guaranteed that this will stop or even slow down your attacker. And all you are left with is bare hands.

Lesson to be learnt:

Never throw a weapon unless your next move is to run away...... FAST!
