Tennis Discussion Thread

Postby bennymacca » Fri May 28, 2010 1:39 pm

does anyone else out there besides matthew follow the tennis?

french open has been kinda interesting so far, federer had a bit of a fight last night.

in the paper today, they had todd woodbridge commenting on the lack of depth in australian mens tennis at the moment.

he said that at the moment, there is no teenager in the top 100 in the world in mens tennis.

i found this amazing. it shows have far the game has come in the last 10 years, and how power serves now dominate.

in years gone by, you could be a number 1 without a huge serve, as long as you had other attributes. agassi, chang, hewitt immediately come to mind.

nowadays it is pretty hard to even get a look in.

even someone like nadaal has a pretty decent serve (he won wimbledon after all) and is not just a baseline brute.

any other tennis fans/players out there?

For a second I was like, wait, Tomic isn't the top 100? But he's an adult now.

I played tennis for about 4 years. Crowning achievement was winning the Singles C title at some regional event, coming back from 40-0, 5-4 down (three championship points!!!) to winning in the tiebreaker, at 5-5 (rules were retarded back then).

I was watching some news report on the French Open the other day and was surprised I had totally missed the Aus Open, seeing as its the first grand slam of the year. I usually enjoy watching it.

I'd like to get back into tennis, but I don't know anyone that would play with me. Russ told me you were playing winter tennis benny the cunt, is that down in Elizabeth, the night courts? Gets fair cold down there.

wabbit: Thanks dude, I like you too

Besides Tomic, Luke Saville will more than likely be our next best player in a few years, havent checked in a while but he was one of the best juniors in the world last year,

Highlight of my Tennis Career was getting a couple games off Luke Saville.......in doubles haha,

yeah i think woodbridge was saying this in response to the journo's questions, which predictably would be along the lines of when is tomic going to be number 1.

Sure benny the cunt, I'd be up for that.

You'll cream me though, and then afterwards you'll smash me in tennis

looks like saville has dropped off this year - ranked 121 in the world in juniors.

another australian jason kubler is ranked 2 in the world in juniors atm.
tomic is ranked 13 in juniors, but plays quite a few ATP tournaments as well, and is ranked 260 in the world in the mens tour

Saville is still only like 15/16. still a few years of juniors left. He's a riverland boy from Cobdogla Tennis club, so when he farts loudly is makes local WIN news.
Riskers gamble, experts calculate.
